As a discerning cat, I know what's the cat's meow when it comes to toys. Here, my suggestions on how to keep your cat happy.
1. Observe your cat. See what kinds of things your cat plays with on her own. This will give you clues to what toys will keep your cat active and happy.
2. Choose something that your cat can move easily. If it swings, rattles, rolls or bounces, chances are your cat will become interested in it. Remember, if it's annoying to your family, it's perfect for you.
3. Pick an interactive toy if you like to play with your cat. Some toys allow you to get some distance from your cat, which will encourage a shy pet to play. Feathers on a string or a long felt band are good toys to get your cat to play with you. Now, you can even buy remote controlled toys.
4. Simulate hunting. Being natural predators, cats love anything that gives them the excitement of the hunt. Toy mice or birds, or toys that make noise will pique your cat's interest.
5. Make your own toys. A cat can't tell if you have spent money on a toy or not, so feel free to be creative. Empty thread spools, ping pong balls, a paper bag, or a crumpled up piece of paper can provide your cat with hours of entertainment.
My personal favorites:
-A feather duster. Just like a real bird. And it's fun to watch Mommy clean up the mess!
-A rubber band. (Some cats will try to eat them, so be VERY careful if you let yours play with one. Make sure that you watch him carefully!) They're great fun to shoot at people. Stick your paw in the loop, and hold it down on the floor. Grab hold of it with your mouth, and pull back. Let go, and watch it fly!
-A squeaky mouse. My mommy bought this mouse at the store. It has a squeaker inside it. When the mouse moves, it squeaks. It's very furry and soft, just like a real mouse.
I also like the selection at
www.kittyhoots.com. The Boogie Mat looks intriguing; maybe I can talk Mommy into buying it for me...
A couple of rules about toys (my Mommy says I have to tell you)...
-If it's broken, you gotta throw it out.
-If it's a new toy, you gotta make sure to take the tags off it.
-If I like to chew on it, you gotta watch me VERY closely. I might choke on it.
-Don't let me play with electrical cords. They may be fun to chew on, but remember what happened in National Lampoon's Christmas?
-Don't give me anything really small to play with. Another choking hazard.
-If you value your breakables, don't let me play with golf balls. (Just something Mommy learned the hard way, heh heh heh

)
-Share if you have to, but always hide a couple of your favorites.
-And, the most important rule of all: Have fun!
